expulsion from the illinois house. wgn's nancy loo joins us live with more on the story. nancy? >> the newly reelected state senator would not say much about the federal indictment against him. derek smith plans to keep fighting. he says he looks forward to returning to the state house that impeached him just a few months ago. derek smith did not seem concerned about being the first house member to be impeached in over 100 years. he is apparently feeling vindicated after winning reelection. he has pleaded not guilty to federal bribery charges have been appalled by the way the democratic party has treated derek smith. either we believe in democracy or we do not. either you are innocent until proven guilty or you're not. henderson claims smith will be acquitted. he will not discuss the defense. despite the indictment and impeachment there's nothing to prevent smith from being sworn in to a new term. >>, with a host of city alderman here to honor the life of this fall and firefighter. he was highly regarded within his profession. a veteran firefighter. we want to show you a live picture. if
. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on w-g-n america and on the web. the labor department announced this morning. a big plus, but also a major minus, in the latest unemployment report released this morning. at the positive end: 171-thousand people landed jobs last month. but, the down side: the unemployment rate rose to 7- point-9 percent. the increase is a sign more and more people are trying to find work. pointed out unemployment is higher now than when president obama took office. he argued that he has a plan to make real changes to fix the job market. early voting ends tomorrow. in chicago. there is one early voting site per ward, plus the chicago election boardice she pleaded with a man for help, but claims he refused. a reporter tracked down that man, who will only go by the name "alan." he shared his side of the story. two year old brendan and four year old connor were found a few blocks away from that home. and the frustration continues to grow. in the aftermath of sandy. across 15 states a
are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. our top story comes just a day after b-p agreed to pay billions in fines for the 2010 deep horizon explosion on the gulf. this morning's blast happened about 25 miles off the coast of grand isle, louisiana. the coast guard says four people have been airlifted to hospitals .... and at least two others are missing. the rig is owned by black elk energy ... and a new orleans t- v station reports about 28 people were on board at the time of the explosion. the coast guard says unlike the deepwater horizon blast in 2010 ... the black elk rig wasn't actively producing oil. so far there are no reports of oil leaking into the water. the fire has been put out. former c-i-a director david petraeus faces lawmakers on capitol hill for the first time today since his stunning resignation. he testified about the deadly attack on a u-s consulate in benghazi, libya in september. he was the director of the spy agency at the time. u-s ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed in the assault. petraeus testifed the c-i-a
